Lake District Activities in and near Bassenthwaite, Cockermouth and Keswick
Brook House Cottages are located in the heart of Bassenthwaite Village in the Northern region of The Lake District National Park, Cumbria approximately 15 minutes drive from the towns of Keswick and Cockermouth. Our cottages are an excellent base to explore some of the quieter corners of the Lake District.
Bassenthwaite Village is two miles from the shores of Bassenthwaite Lake (an ideal walk to the only official lake in the Lake District!) and two miles from the foot of Skiddaw, the fourth highest mountain in the Lake District. There are excellent walks for all abilities straight from the cottage door or after a short drive and a series of walk books of the local area is available with proceeds to cancer research.
There is a wildlife park in Bassenthwaite, 5 mins drive from the cottages, the Lake District Wildlife Park (formerly known as Trotters)
Mirehouse historic house and adventure playgrounds is under 10 mins drive from the cottages, towards Keswick, and this is one of the places from which you can sometimes view the Osprey birds of prey which have made Bassenthwaite Lake their home for the past 10 summers
The Lakes Distillery is under 10 mins drive from the cottages towards Cockermouth offering guided tours
For those wanting to treat themselves with some pampering, the award winning spa at Armathwaite Hall Hotel is 5 mins drive from the cottages
Below is a selection of website links to activities and information, drinking and eating places in and about the area. There are many activities, for all ages and abilities, in the Lake District and Cumbria as well as a great many places to visit and enjoy. Bassenthwaite is almost mid-way between Keswick and Cockermouth so going either direction has its own benefits:
Keswick is a magnet for the Lake District visitor with Derwentwater (lake), several parks including crazy golf, mini golf and putting, all its outdoor shops, cafés, restaurants, galleries, museum, cinema, theatre, brewery and more.
Cockermouth is much more of a locals town first and a visitor centre second though still has more than its fair share of things to see and do for visitors such as several antique shops, Mitchells saleroom every Thursday with occasional specialist antique sales, Mitchells livestock auction market where you can watch sheep and cattle being sold, Jennings Brewery, Wordsworth House (the birthplace of the poet William Wordsworth), the annual food festival in September attracting 30,000 people and a good selection of unique owner-run shops and eateries (many of the restaurants, pubs and cafes are cheaper than equivalent places in Keswick) …
